Standardization Administration of China (SAC), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and National Language Commission held an event to release and publicize the revised mandatory national standard GB 18030-2022, Information technology—Chinese coded character set, in Beijing on July 28, 2022.
Dr. Tian Shihong, Vice-Minister of State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and Administrator of SAC, Mr. Zhang Yunming, Vice-Minister of MIIT, and Mr. Tian Xuejun, Vice-Minister of Ministry of Education and Head of National Language Commission, attended and addressed the event.
“Literal coding is the important basis of informatization, and standardization enables literal coding to play a big role. Whether it is to inherit and develop the traditional Chinese culture, or to achieve "online" government services, Chinese coded characters standardization is required.” Dr Tian said.
“In the next step, SAMR and SAC will work with related departments to constantly strengthen the implementation and innovation of standards, optimize the standards systems in a coordinated way, and improve the international cooperation on standards, to practically promote the standardization work of spoken and written Chinese language to achieve new progress”, he added.
This is the most important standard in the area of Chinese language information technology, which provides the uniform coding of Chinese characters and the languages of ethnic minority groups in China to realize a wide range of application. First published in 2000 and revised in 2005, the standard has supported the demands of processing and exchanges of information in Chinese languages.
The standard will be officially implemented on August 1st, 2023, which includes a total of 87,887 Chinese characters with more than 17,000 rare characters added. It can meet various needs, and provide strong guarantee for inheriting the Chinese culture, enhancing information processing capability and satisfying the demands of using rare characters.
During the event, a representative from China Electronics Standardization Institute introduced the standard in detail, and the experts from Ministry of Public Security and People’s Bank of China gave excellent speeches on standard application.
The event was attended by nearly 50 participants from the standard drafting units and relevant departments such as the E-government Affairs Office of the State Council, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and Inter-ministerial Joint Conference Office on National Electronic Document Management.
