BACKGROUND INFORMATION 

The Nanjing IEC Global Impact Forum represents both the half-way point of the pilot phase of the IEC Global Impact Fund and the platform that will help us to plot a course forward for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025.   

The Fund advances IEC’s vision of “a safer and more efficient world” and demonstrates the catalytic impact of international standards and conformity assessment systems in addressing many of today’s social, economic and environmental challenges. As an experimental collaborative platform that brings together partners and projects to help the electrotechnical and energy communities better understand how we can ensure electricity and technology can serve society, the Fund aims to champion and provide solutions to energy efficiency, the renewable energy transition, next generation power systems, net zero, the circular economy, and sustainable development.    

Following a start-up year in 2023, the first project got under way this year in Kenya, with implementing partner Differ Community Power (DCP) working with several partners including the IEC National Committee of Kenya to help determine the feasibility of using second life lithium batteries to rehabilitate solar PV installations at critical locations such as schools, health centres and hospitals in Kenya. The project is estimated to improve the lives of up to 160 000 rural Kenyans through enabling reliable, clean sources of electricity.    

Early results are showing us that if international standards, alongside sustainable financing, had been considerations during the original installation stages, many of the “solar graveyards” we are now working with would not exist, saving substantial public and private funding.  Our position is that international standards can help unlock sustainable financing. Public-private collaborative financing is critical to scale projects and standards play an important role, both in terms of risk mitigation and as enablers of investor confidence.    

With at least one additional project to begin this year, we hope that through dialogue with those present at this Forum the work can continue in this positive direction.
